ACADEMICS

Junior School - Standard IV and V

Course Work

Subjects taught at the primary school level include English, Mathematics, Social Studies (History, Geography and Civics), Sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics), a second language (Tamil, Hindi or Malayalam), a third language (Tamil, Hindi or Malayalam) and Environmental Education. All languages are taught with a balanced emphasis on both the written as well as the spoken aspects. We have formulated our own syllabus for Social Studies and Sciences with an emphasis on activity-based learning. The activities include the use of audio-visual aids, art, craftwork, map work, experiments, field trips, projects and group discussions. These activities are followed by extensive written work.

Co-Curricular Work

At the junior school level, in addition to the course work, time has been allocated for Moral Science, General Knowledge, Reading and Spoken English. Also, once a week, children have a substantial amount of time allocated for clubs (Quiz. Drama, Science, Language and Math) or various school related activities. These include Junior day (singing, elocution and declamation) and Junior Annual Day (play practice, singing and dance).

Computers

All students in the junior section have practical lessons on using the computer centred around the Microsoft Office software. The topics covered include the basics of Word, Excel, Publisher and Power-point.  They are also introduced to the basics of programming by using the Q-basic language and learn about the components of the computer (hardware).

Homework and Tuitions

In the junior school, only limited homework in English and Mathematics is assigned on a daily basis. For all other subjects, periods are assigned where revision work is assigned under the supervision of the respective subject teachers. One period per day is also assigned for students who need extra tutorials.  These children, are coached free of cost. After school hours, all children are encouraged to spend their free time reading and improving their language skills.

Assessment

No formal tests are conducted. After every topic, a review is conducted and the performance of the student is noted at this time. The aim is to ensure that the students have understood the course work and do not resort to rote learning. Thus, the students are continuously assessed and all subject teachers give a detailed report at the end of every term. The class teacher, head of the junior section and the headmaster continuously monitor each child's performance. Commendations are issued on a weekly basis to encourage the children to excel in academics. Certificates and medals are awarded at the end of the year to the most promising students.

Art, Craft, Music and Dance

All children have an extensive course every week in art and craft work which introduces them to various mediums that can be used.  Children are also progressively exposed to theoretical and practical components of Western Music and Carnatic Music.  In addition to the above, children can also chose between dance (Bharatanatayam), Taek-wan-do or Yoga.

Sports

Students in the junior classes are coached in the finer aspects of all sporting activities including athletics, football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and chess.  As in the primary section, they are coached in the proper scientific technique in order to present them to excel in the sport of their choice later in life.
